LA JOLLAS PLANNING BOARD AGREES TO REFORMS

CITIZENS LAWSUIT DROPPED - INVESTIGATION OF CORRUPTION CHARGES TO PROCEED- DEADLINE SET FOR NEW BYLAWS

La Jolla, California - La Jollans for Clean Government, Inc., a citizens watchdog group, has agreed to dismiss a corruption lawsuit against the La Jolla Community Planning Association, Inc., ("CPA") the official planning board for La Jolla, pending reforms to be instituted by the CPA as well as the results of a City Attorney investigation into corruption at the CPA. The charges against the CPAs management include vote rigging, secret meetings, destruction and falsification of public records and conflicts of interest.

"The City of San Diego has finally realized the need to reform the CPA and is now taking steps to make it a less corrupt and more democratic organization" said Steven Haskins, attorney for La Jollans for Clean Government. Haskins also explained that representatives for Mayor Sanders, Councilmember Peters, City Attorney Aguirre and the CPA will work together with him to develop new bylaws for the CPA which should be in place by October 2006.

The settlement of the case occurred at a City Council meeting where the City was considering hiring a private attorney to defend the CPA at a cost of up to $250,000 in taxpayer funds. Several community members spoke against the expenditure of tax monies to defend a corrupt organization while officials from the CPA spoke in favor. Mayor Sanders' representative Jim Waring spoke in favor of the "stand down" proposed by the plaintiffs in the suit pending the outcome of the City Attorney's investigation and the adoption of new bylaws. At the end of the hearing the Council voted against hiring private attorneys for the CPA.
